Podcast: The Importance of Brain Donation

Shona highlights the importance of brain donation for research, specifically for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas.

In this interview with Shona Floyd on “The Aunty M Brain Tumours Talk Show,” she talks about her daughter Tasha, who tragically passed away from a brain tumour. Tasha was initially diagnosed during her GCSE exam year when she experienced headaches, walking difficulties, and fatigue. However, the symptoms were initially attributed to exam stress, delaying the proper diagnosis. At 16 years old, Tasha was diagnosed with a brain tumour on her brain stem and subsequently lost most of her vision.

Despite the prognosis of only having a year to live, Tasha lived for another eight years, facing her condition with strength and resilience. She became a young ambassador for Headsmart, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about brain tumours and reducing diagnosis waiting times. Tasha met celebrities, raised awareness for brain tumours, and actively participated in charity work.

Shona highlights the importance of brain donation for research purposes, specifically for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas (DIPG), the type of brain tumour Tasha had. She emphasizes the need for more brain samples to aid researchers in finding a cure for this aggressive form of brain tumour.

Overall, Shona’s touching story sheds light on the impact of brain tumours on young individuals and the significance of early diagnosis and brain donation for research to improve treatments and outcomes.
