What To Do When Doctors Say: We Can not Help You

Things to Help When Barriers Go Up, And The Doctors Say “We Can Not Fix This, There Are No Solutions!”

I want to share what to do when doctors say: we cannot help you.

Wow, it is January 2021 already. To start the year I wanted to share with you some good and bad news. This post will not be for everyone as I am about to talk about how amazing God is to me. This post is all about how my faith kicks in when I get kicked down by detrimental doctor appointments or situations.

I know I am a child of God and I am a Believer, this does not mean I have a stress-free easy life

I still have my struggles and know it’s easy to think, Why me! But, Why not me?

Using your situation for good

The difference to me is that I am never going through this alone.  I truly believe God will always use a situation to pull me toward him and will use my case for good.

I have always tried to keep my anxious brain under control as I have suffered from anxiety for years. Still thinking the worst of what might happen when I feel dizzy or faint. My biggest fear now has never been of having another brain tumour. It has always been about having seizures and losing all independence because I can’t do things alone.

Then I say this, I wouldn’t want people to think my life looks great, I have had so many fantastic opportunities and blessings. I just do things even though I am scared of doing anything, in case I can’t cope, and I bring on a seizure.

I read this great book about tricking our brain into thinking we are happy. Our thoughts are so important as they are what will make a day go from good to bad or from bad to good. We have to trick our brains.  I read Rewire Your Anxious Brain: How to Use the Neuroscience of Fear to End Anxiety, Panic, and Worry. I found this fascinating and so helpful in understanding the way our thoughts work. One of the things I learnt was, we need to have the odd negative day, so we recognise the days which are amazing. We need bad days for perspective. Those days are the ones we learn about ourselves.

Learning about ourselves

Last week I was looking through my records and appointment letters and realised I hadn’t taken in that I was diagnosed with Hemianopia Quadrantanopia. Flip me that is a mouthful. I try not to say Utopia instead of Hemianopia, although being partially blind is anything but Utopia. It is pants.  I always thought it was my eyes that were damaged but it turns out it’s because of the damage was done in the brain.

So, once that information sunk in, I looked onto Mr. Google to find out what this meant for me.

“hemianopia, the loss of the right or left half of the visual field in both eyes. However, some patients with neurological visual field loss find the term “quadrantanopia” in their medical records. If “hemianopia” means that you cannot see in half of your visual field, does “quadrantanopia” mean that you cannot see in a quarter of your visual field? Correct. Quadrantanopia refers to the loss of vision in one of the quarters of the visual field”.

When doctors say there is no hope

When I look at this situation which says’s there is NO CURE for Quadrantanopia, this means the only way I will be healed from this, is through God.

Anytime I feel hit in the face with a ‘NO’ or anything discouraging, I do what I always do. I go to see what I can learn from it, go to my bible, or I go online and watch the latest video from T.D Jakes, Jessie Duplantis or Joyce Myer. I watched an excellent sermon from T.D. Jakes about how “Your Problem Serves Your Purpose”.

I knew the minute I saw the title, I was getting a word from God for me.

Pastor T.D Jakes was sharing the story of 2 Kings Chapter 5. It is about when the man Naaman who was the commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was Healed of Leprosy. It is a fantastic chapter. Full Chapter Here.

Naaman had been told there was no help for him. There was no cure and no way of stopping the sores on his body. In this day and age, Leprosy is curable with a treatment known as multidrug therapy. This has only been found since 1873. There has never been a proven cure before that.

I know and honestly believe God has already healed me but, he will give me my gift when God chooses it is the right time.

What To Do When Doctors Say We Cannot Help You

There is always HOPE

So a few things to think about when life delivers a dose of difficulty and stress is that it is almost impossible to stay happy 24/7 – 365 days of the year but there is always Hope, and that is free. Happiness is never constant, and it’s not supposed to be. How can we appreciate and feel the joy of overcoming something we are going through if everything is perfect?

The only thing that will hold you back is if you refuse to confront what is happening. It sounds quite harsh, but if we ignore it and sweep it under the carpet, it will just build up and stress us out.

Another thing, if you had your brain tumour 10 years ago, it doesn’t mean you haven’t had problems, physically or/and mentally. It’s not easy to put that absolute stress and traumatic experience away in a box and move on from it all.

Ways to think differently when doctors say we cannot help you:

  • ‘I can’t do this today, but’ I’ll definitely try again tomorrow.’
  • ‘Today, I may be alone, I will have a productive day keeping busy.’
  • ‘I don’t understand this, I will ask for help and take off some of the load.’
  • ‘Life is not easy, but it is worth it.’
  • ‘Start your morning ready to go further than you did yesterday.’
